Hand launch glider is one of the oldest events in our sport, originating both indoors and outdoors at the time we began keeping performance records on freeflight events. Typically, the glider is launched by hand, as the title of the event would suggest, using an overhand or side-armed throwing motion that propels the model upwards at a steep angle and then allows the model to level off at the top of the trajectory and assume a gliding attitude. It is thrown much like a baseball, and because of the limitations of the human throwing arm, HLGs nominally have a wingspan in the neighborhood of 18-20 inches and weigh slightly over an ounce for outdoor competition.
