This writer has periodically found himself involved in discussions on Japanese combat aircraft and, invariably, the other party knew little of aircraft engineering and so the usual thrust of their argument was that the Japanese were capable only of copying another's designs. They cite the old "chestnut" of Japanese photographing the paint off the Hughes H-1 Racer, then rushing home to design the Mitsubishi Zero!
