Intended to push the performance envelope set by its earlier "Cat" brothers, the Grumman F8F Bearcat was a small, lightweight interceptor designed with the intention of stuffing the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine into the smallest practical air-frame. The initial prototype, designated the XF8F-1, first flew on August 21, 1944. The first production models were delivered in May of 1945, just missing any opportunity to see combat in WWII.
