During the Surrender Ceremony aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, the U.S. and its allies arranged for a flyover by military aircraft. Few details have survived, but the aerial armada of carrier-based Navy warplanes and Army B-29 Superfortress bombers may have totaled 2,000 airplanes, making it the largest formation of aircraft ever assembled. When the War was over, most of the U.S. top brass believed that all of these aircraft—the carrier planes included - would soon belong to an independent United States Air Force.
