On February 20,1962, NASA astronaut John H. Glenn Jr., circled the globe three times in four hours and 56 minutes, reaching a speed of about 17,500mph. Some three years earlier in April 1959, he was selected as a member of the first group of American astronauts known as the Mercury Seven, which included Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton.
