The U.S. navy has employed vinyl wraps, like the graphics-rich appliques seen on buses and NASCAR racers, to a pair of outdoor display aircraft as an alternative to traditional painting. The wraps replicate authentic paint and markings for an early A4D Skyhawk at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and an F-4 Phantom II at Naval Air Station Point Mugu, both in California. Aaron Podell's AP Studios in Ridgecrest, California, pioneered the wrap on A4D-1 BuNo 137814 at China Lake, and followed with F-4S BuNo 157259. The Skyhawk first received a basic wrap replicating its gray and white paint scheme. Specific markings were applied as additional wraps over the base, and the entire effort was then sealed.
