Ralph E. Elliott, Jr., received his navy wings in October 1941 and built invaluable experience as an instructor. He recalled his combat service in this 1994 letter to the author. "Prior to joining VC-271 had been stuck instructing cadets at Corpus Christ!, Texas, for two years after being commissioned. I was afraid that the war would be over before I got out there.
