Approaching the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the Allies had as much reason for optimism as the Axis Powers did for gloom. From October through December 1942, the course of the Second World War was clearly set on the road to an Allied victory, however rough and remote it may have seemed. Allied air power was crucial in those months, supporting ground and naval forces while waging increasing counter-air operations on ever-greater scales.
