Which Comes FIRST™: Process or People?

We all know that the Flexographic Technical Association''s FIRST™ (Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications and Tolerances) guidelines are designed to optimize pressroom practices, but we never really hear the gory details of its implementation. In the classroom, printing by the numbers is done on a regular basis. But that''s education, right? We instructors have that luxury! I''m often told, "It could never be done like that consistently in the real world!" I had the opportunity to disprove that statement this past year when I worked with a large North American label printer on implementing FIRST™ at its facility. Throughout the course of this project, I encountered some very interesting things.
