Call it the ultimate thankless job. NAFA Member Kevin Schlangen, CAFM~®, was tasked with merging 16 different government fleets in Dakota County, MN, into a centralized program, with one funding and replacement policy and one maintenance program. He then took on the role as fleet manager for the newly formed department. "They wanted countywide procedures and policies, not just ones that took place in one department," Schlangen said. "With so many customers, I needed better communication." He formed an advisory group with someone from each department to discuss fleet issues. He also created a point system for replacement vehicles - a massive turnaround from what had previously been based largely on which of the 16 competing departments could secure funds from county administration. But he had to make the changes in a way that was fair - and kept the entire fleet in good working order.
