Fuel Efficient Vehicles Could Mean Rougher Roads

In recent years, James Whitty and a group of his cohorts have moved their desks squarely into the fishbowl of public opinion. As part of a Road User Fee Task Force set up by the Oregon Legislative Assembly, they've been assigned a daunting challenge: developing a new way to collect money for the state's roads and highways, rather than the long-standing fuel tax. And many other state officials, faced with the same potential of diminishing revenue in years to come, are sitting back watching to see how Oregon will pull it off. 'They're definitely all looking hard at us right now," said Whitty, the task force administrator. "Everyone's in 'show-me' mode."
