When Canada was plunged into an election in December, no one could have predicted the many surprises the campaign would hold over the next eight weeks, including its astonishing finish. The reigning Liberal party, having lost a vote of confidence, went on to lose the election. The Conservative Party, led by now-prime minister Stephen Harper, campaigned policies that were drastically different than its predecessor, leaning more towards the right. The Conservatives have a rocky recent history in Canada, having lost almost every seat in the House of Commons in 1993 and built back up support in the country for the right-of-centre. Today's Conservative Party brings together two parties under one, making waves in the west, in Ontario and, most notably, in Quebec.
