The Next Generation of FIeet Managers

If you had asked Charles E. Tyler, Jr. 10 years ago if he could see himself as a fleet manager, he probably would have laughed in your face. Tyler, like many attending colleges or universities in the nineties, didn't even know what a fleet manager was or what the job entailed. The first thought that came to mind revolved around trucking, which wasn't the picture he saw of his future. "Young folks my age look at money," explained Charles E. Tyler, Jr. "We look at money, benefits and image. That's what attracts us to a lot of jobs." As luck would have it, Tyler not only found himself entering the world of fleet management, he became one of the youngest fleet managers in the nation. Still in his mid-30s, he looks around at fellow NAFA members and other fleet managers and can't help but notice that he's always the youngest in the room. While it's not exactly a crisis situation right now, the future of fleet management will rely on finding the next generation of fleet managers and adequately training them to take over when the current leaders retire. This may mean thinking 'outside the box' and searching for more candidates like Tyler, whose own background seems more suited for government than fleet management, rather than just looking for technicians or those in the automotive field.
