Education, fleet size, and gender play major roles in the amount of compensation for a fleet manager, according to NAFA's 2008 Salary & Compensation Survey. As expected, the more educated a fleet manager is and the larger the fleet, the greater the compensation; however, there is also a striking disparity among salaries for males and females-especially at the top end of the pay scale. Fleet managers from all over North America were polled on their salaries, compensation, and personal information relative to the specifics of their fleet. More than 260 private and public fleet managers participated in the survey, which was conducted over a period of three weeks in September and October 2008. This article summarizes the composite results for Commercial Fleets and Government Fleets. Results that correlate all the specific fleet variables (private or public, industry, company size, operating budget, fleet size, and outsourcing levels) and individual variables (gender, age, education, certification, experience in fleet, size of staff supervised, percentage of non-fleet duties, and geographic area) are available by visiting www.nafa.org/benchmarking.
