Fire correspondent Tony Prosser looks in depth at the history of fire prevention in the UK, beginning at the post war period and austerity Britain.rnThe low fire deaths that were achieved in England in the last year were not the result of short-term measures to achieve a political result on the part of any government or the Fire and Rescue Service. Rather, it was the accumulation of a sustained effort made across a wide range of bodies including government, the Service, representative bodies and individuals committed to the cause of reducing fires and fire casualties. Whether this achievement becomes sustainable or has just merely suppressed fire deaths for a little while is still a matter of conjecture.
