West Yorkshire's urban search and rescue (USAR) complex has been opened by Fire Minister, Shahid Malik MP.rnThe state-of-the-art training centre has been developed at the county's fire HQ in Birkenshaw, backed by central government funding. USAR equipment and training has been provided by the government to enable the fire and rescue service to respond to a wide range of incidents, arising from both natural and manmade disasters including heavy rescue from road, rail and air accidents, building collapse, rescues at height and trench collapse.
