Sweden ramps up recruitment of women

Significantly in Sweden (as in the UK and throughout the world), there is significant resistance by male (and some female) firefighters to developing a more gender equitable service.rnStanding almost alone, the Swedish Fire Service/government continues to spend money and effort in supporting the employment of women firefighters. In seeking to answer why this difference occurs I think about this in two ways and both concern the Swedish psyche. First, the government and managers recognise how Swedish democratic ideals are offended by the lack of female firefighters. Second, when presenting to Swedish firefighters they recognise that their attitudes and the resulting harassment confronts national norms and is simply wrong.
