Learning from disasters at the Incident Command Conference

Those of you who have been around for a few years in the Fire and Rescue Service will recognise and fully appreciate the critical importance of effective command, whether it is being applied at crew level during routine incidents, at tactical level at more complex events or at a strategic level at major emergencies. An inherent understanding of effective incident command is an absolute necessity for all concerned - the psychology of decision-making within a time pressured domain; the processes and systems of work required as part of an organised and structured approach in a dynamically unfolding and potentially chaotic situation; and sound, logical operational practice to bring about a safe and satisfactory conclusion to what are usually dramatic, high risk, spectacular events to the untrained eye.
