The January issue of FIRE published a feature focussed on Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service in which many readers will recall Roy Wilsher talking about the future role of the Fire Service. In response to a question about the general reduction in the number of fires and its potential for a 'fundamental change in the role of firefighters', CFO Wilsher referred to a comment made by one of his predecessors, who said: 'It won't be long before we're calling ourselves the Rescue and Fire Service'. Although I am unable to credit the reference it did at the time remind me of some research I did a couple of years ago.
