I was moved by the Editor's comments on sprinklers in the May issue of FIRE (pg 3 'In praise of common sense') and wholly echo his sentiments on the foolish decision to oust Jon O'Neill for daring to offer a counter view for the very specific purpose of engendering debate. At the risk of being branded a "sprinkler denier" I offer the thoughts below. I am a firm advocate for sprinklers in all premises in which they will add to the protection of the occupants and of the property. Even having declared myself as being so (as a risk engineer who seeks to identify all possible control measures and apply a blended set of appropriate, reasonable and financially wise solutions), I find the overwhelming rush to advocate sprinklers might be seen as a capitulation to the fact that other risk control measures higher up the hierarchy are not going to be effective or, arguably, even considered?
