Community safety is at the forefront of the proactive approach of TWFRS; aiming to prevent fires from happening in the first place through education, advice, and intervention. For the first time in the history of our service, no one lost their life in an accidental house fire in Tyne and Wear during 2012. This is excellent news of which all members of TWFRS are extremely proud. We are also the only metropolitan fire and rescue service to have done this. We believe that this fantastic achievement is as a result of our effective Home Safety Check (HSC) strategy, our education campaigns, the positive increase in smoke alarm ownership, partnership working, the dedication of all staff across the service and of course, a degree of good fortune.
