Sometime in 1993, a group of members of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Thames Valley Branch, took part in an educational visit to Sweden. As a member of the group, I was fortunate enough to take part in training for, what was then, cutting-edge firefighting techniques and technology. Compartment firefighting based upon controlled, gas cooling using pulsed sprays of water managing the rate of combustion was a relatively new and exciting development for UK firefighters but it was apparently in widespread use in Sweden.
