As the pension dispute rumbles on inexorably, grinding away below the mass public consciousness whilst torturing all Fire and Rescue Service personnel with its maddening refusal to resolve itself, one could be forgiven for wondering if it will ever come to an end. During the last national dispute FIRE was vocal in supporting, cajoling and criticising all sides in turn with the underlining assumption of convergence to promote a better public service. Then, the future of the Fire and Rescue Service was at stake and the resultant modernisation, professionalisation and reduction in deaths and injuries have shown that some kind of virtuous circle was at play.
