Grenfell legacy: Search for a fire safe future

Writing in the July/August when introducing our focus on Grenfell Tower, I stated: 'The fire safety lobby failed to impart the message and FIRE, as part of that movement, is no less responsible for falling short, regardless of the heartfelt endeavour'. It is partially that failure that drives the need to spearhead effective and long-lasting change, evidenced in our forthcoming Congress, Out of the flames: Afire safe future after the tragedy of Grenfell Tower. It is not an exercise in fire sector recrimination, although we have to acknowledge institutionalised complacency, obstinacy and systemic inertia which meant concerns were easily discarded by successive regimes. That does not alter the fact that as a sector we failed to communicate our concerns.
