Chris and Gillian Stephenson, of Murrayfield Road in Cowgate, Newcastle, were presented with their awards by Chief Fire Officer, Tom Capeling. Mr and Mrs Stephenson sprang into action when their neighbours' home caught fire on Sunday, September 4,2016. Chris was woken just after 10:00 by smoke coming through his open bedroom window. He then got out of bed to investigate and saw smoke billowing from the upstairs front bedroom of the house next door. He woke his wife Gillian, who rang 999, and then ran downstairs whilst getting dressed.
