Inorganic Intumescent Coatings for Improved Fire Protection of GRP

An inorganic intumescent coating that could be used on naval vessels was developed for the fire protection of GRP. This coating only releases water vapor when it is exposed to fire, so it is safer for personnel than organic coatings. This coating was tested for envi- ronmental stability and flammability properties in a quarter-scale room test at the David Taylor Research Center in Annapolis, Maryland The tests' results met the naval require- Ments.
