摘要

This book represents the fifth in the Fire and Polymers series and is essentially an abridged Proceedings from the 5th Fire and Polymers Symposium, held in New Orleans, Louisiana in April of 2008. As an abridged version is contains a selection of papers from the Symposium, based on their significance in the field and their focus on the subject. Of the 44 papers presented at the Symposium only 22 have been selected for inclusion in this book, all of which have undergone peer review as part of their inclusion. The book is introduced by a chapter written by the editors setting the scene of the fire issue in the US. Indeed, it is against the backdrop of a fire occurring in a structure in the US "at the rate of one every 59 seconds" that the need for fire retardant polymers is most clear. Alternative methods of fire prevention are eschewed as ineffective in comparison to mitigation of the fire risk itself, i.e. modification of the ignition propensity and fire performance of the material inside structures. The book is unevenly divided into five sections: Composites and Nanocomposites, Conventional Fire Retardants, Metal-Containing Systems, Toxicity and Thermal Degradation Studies: with the majority of the papers concentrated to the first two.
