New detection methods and the improvement of existing technologies are continually taking place. Here Steve Scorfield, Technology Manager, Systems Sensor Europe, gives an up-to-date review. The major detector manufacturers are continually developing new detection methods and improving existing technologies in order to provide better performance. The ultimate goal of instantaneous detection of a real fire combined with zero false alarms arising from environmental disturbances is unlikely ever to be realised, but the 'performance of today's fire detectors are several orders of magnitude better than those available only a few years ago. Historically, a conventional smoke detector was no more than a simple on-off switch with a single, factory-preset alarm threshold. Recently, the majority of fire detector manufacturers have concentrated the bulk of their development efforts on migrating the features and benefits from their addressable product
