Silver medal for Barbara Lane from Royal Academy of Engineering

Dr Barbara Lane, associate director with consultancy Arup, has won a Royal Academy of Engineering silver medal for her outstanding contribution with a commercial benefit to British engineering. During her PhD research at Edinburgh University and subsequent collaborations with the researchers there, Dr Lane developed the application of computer models, analysing the behaviour of steel-framed structures during fires. Her research showed that the conventional fire proof cladding used on steel wasn't effective when not maintained, and that a fire changed and weakened the steel structure. She concluded this needed to be tackled at the design stage.
