ROGER BARRETT: A CHAMPION OF CHANGE

His work on various UK and European working groups has helped to form the standards on which the design of today's smoke, heat, flame and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are based. He sat on Technical Committee 72 and wrote whole sections of EN54 - including the chapters on point heat detectors (EN54-5), point smoke detectors using scattered light, transmitted light or ionisation technologies (EN54-7), and point flame detectors (EN54-10). He was also very active within the BFPSA (now the FIA), chairing the organisation's Fire Detection Working Group 3 and sitting on the Fire Detection & Alarms Committee. He also chaired the joint BFPSA and BRE special task group that drafted the Loss Prevention Standards for CO, CO/heat and optical/CO/heat fire detectors.
