Any university fire safety policy must consider a wide variety of premises. Dr Roger Slade addresses the problems associated with keeping laboratories safe. ALTHOUGH THE activities taking place and the hazards within university laboratories can vary, all such premises share at least one common risk, that of fire. Fire hazards exist as a result of the everyday use and storage of highly flammable liquids, combustible gases, reactive chemicals and oxidants, together with ignition sources, such as bunsen burners, electrical equipment, hot surfaces and ovens.
