This time of year sees the harvest in full swing. If the weather is warm and dry, fire brigades in rural areas are likely to be busy dealing with fires that usually accompany the harvest. The combine harvester and baling machines are particularly vulnerable to fire and when they do erupt into flames, the fire often spreads to involve the field in which the machinery is being used. If a standing crop yet to be harvested is lost, all the farmer's hard work in growing it is lost in a few minutes. In addition, expensive machinery is lost at the time of year it is most needed.
