Paul Compton looks to new research conducted in the United States to investigate whether sprinklers affect the operation of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems. Since the initial development of modern smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems (SHEVS) in the 1950s, there has always been a concern about potential interactions between sprinklers and SHEVS and in particular the risk of an operating SHEVS either delaying the operation of the first sprinkler head or affecting the number of sprinkler heads that operate.
