Fire officers are notorious for wanting doors closed but not Mocked. For many years the advice from the fire brigade has been to close all internal doors at night, particularly in a dwelling. The reason for this is the hope and expectation that most doors will hold back heat, smoke and flame for a time and that any occupants not in the room of fire origin will be given an opportunity to escape. This advice was first promulgated long before the idea of fitting smoke alarms in residential property became common. Is it now time to give thought to this guidance in view of the advent of domestic smoke detection?
