The royal Albion Hotel was one of the oldest in Brighton, built in 1826 and situated opposite Palace Pier. It was a five-storey building with a basement and housed 115 bedrooms. The original structure had been added to over the last century, including a £5m renovation in 1993. At 8.22am on 24 November 1998 East Sussex Fire Brigade received the first of thirty calls reporting a fire at the hotel.
