Discussing disaster

The new Civil Contingencies Act 2004 has generated much debate about planning for, and responding to, major emergencies in England and Wales. And, with the Act receiving Royal Assent in Parliament on 18 November, it was perhaps inevitable that the legislation and its implications for the fire service would be central to discussions at the annual research conference at the Fire Service College. A number of presentations at the event, held on 24-25 November 2004, focused on the Act and surrounding issues, such as emergency planning and management, firefighter welfare and training.
