Aspirating smoke detection can overcome many of the problems faced by conventional systems when used in heritage buildings. A nation's historic buildings and associated architecture and contents are irreplaceable and thus should be protected to the highest possible level. Fire damage to a major heritage building and its contents is very rare but when it happens, the sense of loss is acute. While early smoke detection is often key to the protection of such valuable assets, many conventional systems are simply too obtrusive and are not sympathetic to the ornate nature of the building. As such, they are not acceptable to the building owner since they would detract from the aesthetics. In most cases, this is the primary reason why conventional detection is a less popular option.
