For the past 25 years, fire service leaders have been trying to educate the public and policy-makers about the growing systemic problems in the delivery of fire protection to communities. The fact of the matter is that many fire departments called to a fire cannot get to the scene quickly enough. When one considers this issue alongside the effective protection provided by sprinklers, it is clear that more needs to be done to promote the wider use of these systems. The experience of Vancouver, Canada — where a byelaw which requires sprinklers to be fitted in all new residential buildings has brought real success — is a case in point.
