As it is for many other professional institutions, the issue of professional development - a key theme of this month's journal - is one of the cornerstones of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and, in many ways, its raison d'etre. It is of great importance in ensuring the Institution's credibility within both the fire safety profession and the wider context of professional conduct in society.rnThroughout the IFE's 90-year history, professional development and subsequent recognition has been an important focus for many members. Indeed, it is often quoted as the main reason why individuals choose to join. The fact that many individuals and organisations today view professional development as such a valuable commodity is extremely encouraging. While the way in which it is presented and delivered may change from time to time - for instance, different emphases are placed on academic or vocational aspects at various points in time - the core concept remains important.
