FIREFIGHTERS IN London tackled, on average, one fire every nine minutes for five consecutive days during the recent civil disturbances, says a new London Fire Brigade report. Firefighters attended more than 800 fires during 6-10 August. The busiest single day was 9 August, when crews went to 263 incidents. Its control centre staff also saw an extraordinary number of calls. For four nights in a row, they handled, on average, one call every 48 seconds. However, despite being one of the busiest periods in its history, the brigade had enough resources to cope and only one firefighter was injured. The report is available from www.london-fire.gov.uk
