Fires in road and rail tunnels pose a major risk in terms of life safety and economic disruption. More than 500 people have died in tunnel fires across Europe in the last 15 years. In addition to multiple casualties and injuries, these incidents can result in long-term halts in critical traffic arteries. Indeed, tunnel fires cost up to 200 million Euros per year for European industry.
