Chemical alert

Southern Areas of the Netherlands were put on alert on 5 January after a fire at a chemical plant generated a large, potentially toxic cloud of smoke. A fire and series of explosions at the Chemie-Pack plant near Rotterdam prompted authorities to take precautionary action - advising local residents to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut, and putting parts of South Holland province on alert until the fumes had dispersed.
