London's worst false alarm offenders named

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has named and shamed the worst offenders for false alarms in the capital and all of the top ten are hospitals. LFB said it has attended more than 30,000 false alarm calls over the past 12 months, which is 7.3% less than the previous year. In January 2014, the Brigade began charging £295 per call out to any site that has 10 or more false alarms inside 12 months. Since introducing this policy, LFB has invoiced £499,466 for its services in relation to attending false alarms, but £265,740 of this debt is still outstanding. The top ten offenders for false alarms were all hospitals and LFB has published this list in an attempt to raise awareness about the problem. The top ten locations for 2014 were: 1. St George's Hospital, Tooting (168) 2. University College Hospital, Euston Road (75) 3. Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield (66) 4. University Hospital, Lewisham (62) 5. St Mungo's Broadway, Camden (60) 6. Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich (60) 7. Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead (56) 8. Homerton University Hospital (49) 9. St Helier Hospital, Carshalton (49) 10. Hillingdon Hospital (44) LFB head of fire safety Neil Orbell explained that the Brigade is keen to work with repeat false alarm offenders to reduce the number of call outs. He pointed to a joint partnership between LFB and Heathrow Airport that has led to a reduction in calls by around 70% since April 2013.
