Note: Use of the Cone Calorimeter for Testing Non-planar Products

ISO 5660, Clause 5.1, defines the suitability of products for testing. There are, however, many non-planar prod- ucts (e.g. pipes, cables, corrugated sheet) which manu- facturers and specifiers would like to test in the cone calorimeter. If the product (or an elemental part of the product) can be positioned inside a specimen pan, then it may be possible to obtain some data. It must be recog- nized that these data should not be compared directly with those obtained from a flat specimen since a signifi- cant proportion of the non-planar specimen surface (e.g. ＞50/100 of the surface lies more than 10 mm from the normal plane taken at the highest point of the exposed surface) will not be receiving the heat flux at which the cone calorimeter was calibrated.
