Short Communication: A Methodology for Evaluating the Effect of Drying on the Heat of Combustion of Wood-based Materials

摘要

It is a common practice to dry high moisture content fuels prior to testing in the cone calorimeter. Drying is usually conducted in a drying oven where the temperature is maintained between the limits 104-110℃ for several hours. Generally, such temperature levels are not sufficient to initiate any significant fuel pyrolysis. However, for high volatile content fuels such as wood-based materials, even a low pyrolysis rate may lead to a substantial loss of combustibles during the extensive drying period. As a result, the effective heat of combustion obtained from the cone calorimeter would be underestimated. In this study, a methodology is proposed to determine if there is any combustible loss during drying. A similar methodology has been recently proposed for determining the effect of drying on the heating values of biomass fuels.
