Breathing Apparatus - A Part of Personal Protection

It could be said that the first personal protective equipment was the loin cloth, thousands of years ago, providing protection against the working environment of the cave dwellers. Since that time, we have learnt to adapt working clothes to provide necessary protection in homes as well as at work. Today, most people know that there are protective gloves, shoes and clothing designed specifically with safety in mind. The firefighter, however, presents a challenge to these safety designers. Any firefighter must be protected against heat and flames, must be able to perform in darkness, in unknown territory, by climbing, crawling, shuffling, pulling and pushing, lifting and carrying.
