Custom Built

There is a degree of mystification in the fire service about what actually constitutes a custom-built fire apparatus. Equally as confusing are the cost differences in custom-built apparatus from one manufacturer to another. Historically, a custom fire truck was indicative of the fact that the running gear— the cab and chassis portion of the apparatus—was designed and built exclusively for the fire service. A custom cab and chassis would not be used to haul fuel oil or as a delivery van. Commercially available cabs and chassis, either modified for or built to fire service specifications, were and still are known as commercial fire trucks. Hence, apparatus were referred to as either custom or commercial regardless of the complexity of the plumbing system and body components. It was generally accepted that customs were more costly than commercials. However, that is no longer true, as a very customized apparatus can be provided on a commercial chassis.
