Here we go again with these "bailing out" headfirst ladder slides. In the October 2000 issue ("The Headfirst Ladder Slide: Three Methods" by Rick Lasky; John J. Salka, Jr.; and Bob Pressler), we can select from three methods. They are all unsafe! Recent events prove it, notably the death of a fire captain who was going to show his crew what he had learned. I was at least glad to see that safety ropes were used for the bail-out training in the article. However, this points out the real dangers in teaching the headfirst bail-out technique.
