Most of us may think about fire prevention only once a year. Although many fire departments hold safety programs during Fire Prevention Week in October, they stop thinking about it until the next year. Typically, the fire prevention group has a low or even nonexistent budget, since operating a fire prevention program is nowhere nearly as exciting as "putting the wet stuff on the red stuff" that we all enjoy so much. But if you want to have a real impact on your community, you need to try a little harder than just putting on a once-a-year program. Your fire prevention program can't be static. In my department, we have transformed our fire prevention program into a year-round operation, refocusing our program to cover a broader range of seasonal public safety topics. Below are some ideas you can adapt to your local needs and conditions, giving your community a progressive, top-notch fire prevention program. Our program is always evolving; yours should be, too. As with fire tactics, if the current plan is not working, change it and try something else. We have used these ideas and adjusted them as we learned more about what works and what doesn't.
