SCISSOR STAIRS

Scissor stairs are a spacesaving device. Two stairways are located in one shaft. Consider stairway A: Its doorway on the fifth floor is in a certain location; its doorways on the fourth and sixth floors will be in different locations and perhaps be blocked off by a partition . The doorways for stairway B on the floors above and below will be directly above the doorway for stairway A. When operating at a fire in a multistory building, Command might decide that stairway A is to be the attack stairway and stairway B the exit stairway. This is an attempt to keep the exit stairway clear of firefighters, hoselines, and smoke. In a New York City fire, firefighters discovered that all the stairway doors in one vertical line were designated "A" and in the other "B." This could cause a deadly delay.
